“It’s amazing! I’m so chuffed to have a home that’s mine.”

A home is much more than a building; it’s a foundation for stability, comfort, and hope. And when we hand over the keys, we’re not just welcoming someone into a new property, we’re helping them start a new chapter.

As we helped customers get settled into their new homes in Blaenllynfi last month, John Davies shared his humbling journey to his new home.

John’s journey

Three years ago, John made the move from Reading to Maesteg to help care for a friend after COVID-19. What he thought would be a short stay turned into a long and uncertain housing journey.

At first, he lived in Airbnbs, but the costs quickly became too high. He then moved into a house share, which brought its own challenges like steep stairs and housemates living separate lives, each just passing through.

Things became even more difficult when the landlord failed to pay the mortgage, and the property went into repossession. Suddenly, John and the other residents were facing eviction.

John had to go to court to make sure his belongings weren’t taken away, and was granted two extra months to find somewhere new. That’s when he joined the housing register and received a call from us about a new flat in Blaenllynfi.

John has mobility issues after suffering a stroke, so finding a home that met his needs was vital. When he received the keys to his new ground-floor home, it marked the end of years of uncertainty.

With a smile that said it all, he told us:

It’s amazing. I’m so happy, so chuffed to have a home that’s mine. I don’t have to worry about the stairs anymore, and I can just enjoy life again.

For John, this home represents independence, safety, and peace of mind, something he hasn’t felt for a long time.

His new home in Blaenllynfi gives him more than just a place to live; it gives him back his freedom and the chance to focus on what matters most: enjoying life again.
