Tackling Waste Together

Published on:

You’ve told us waste is a problem in our communities, and we’re listening.

Dumped rubbish, fly-tipping and illegal waste removal don’t just make our streets look untidy, they’re dangerous, costly, and unfair on everyone. In the last year alone, we’ve spent over £100,000 clearing waste across Bridgend.

Our caretakers already spend time each week on our estates, but we know you’d rather see that time and money used to improve your neighbourhood, not just clean up after others.

So we’re doing something about it, and we want you to know we’re here to help you, too.

Spot it? Report it.

If you see someone dumping waste, you can report it anonymously to the council or get in touch with us directly. It only takes a minute, and it makes a difference.

How we’re supporting you

We know it can be confusing to know what’s legal and what’s not when it comes to waste. Whether you’re hiring someone to remove rubbish or doing it yourself as part of your business, we’re here to help you understand the rules and avoid getting caught out.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you’re paying someone to take your rubbish, make sure they’re licensed to carry waste. Ask to see their waste carrier license.
  • If your waste is dumped illegally and traced back to you, you’re the one who will be fined.
  • If you’re being paid to remove waste, you need a waste carrier license, even if it’s just a small job in someone’s garden.

If you’re taking waste away for money and disposing of it yourself, you’re operating as a business, and that means you must:
  • Get a license from Natural Resources Wales. It costs £169 and lasts 3 years.
  • Use licensed disposal sites like Nolan’s Skips or ACD, and commercial waste must be dealt with professionally.
  • No license? That’s against the law, and you could face action.

What we’re doing as part of #LoveYourStreet

We’re not just raising awareness – we’re taking action.

  • Our Caretaking Team is visiting communities to clear fly-tipping and keep the area clean, safe and cared for.
  • Every few months, we go on Walkabout Wednesdays, checking in with you and identifying issues.
  • We’ve recently started working with Natural Resources Wales to stop several unlicensed businesses from removing waste illegally.
  • We’ll be inviting Natural Resources Wales to Summer Fun Days and ASB drop-in events to talk to you about how to report fly-tipping, get licensed, and protect yourself.

You can find more information on the NRW website.

Together, we can clean up our communities and make sure our streets are places to be proud of.
